double-sided, single board with EVENING REVIEW OFFICE in original white on a black ground, and mounted in a white-painted frame; 13.75" x 32.5". The consignor's notes indicate that the sign was discovered in the Ohio River near Gallipolis by C.E. Rothgeb during the 1913 flood. It was saved not as a sign, but as a piece of scrap wood to be used later (and fortunately never was!). Given the location where it was found, the Evening Review probably refers to the the East Liverpool Evening Review.

Michael and Jacob Ardner were born in Germany and immigrated to American with their father Jacob, and the 1850 census lists all three working as weavers in the Mount Vernon area. Jacob and Michael wove together from 1851 to 1859.

Approx. 79" x 77", excluding fringe. Ambrose Miller (1812 - ca 1891) was born in Alsace-Lorraine, apprenticed in Europe and immigrated to Kentucky by 1847. At some point he moved back east to Blair County, Pennsylvania, where he is listed as a weaver as late as 1888.
