first line stating TARIFF & TEXAS!, a combination of a sales and political statement broadside printed on heavy paper advertising to all Men, Women, and Children, Whigs and Democrats, Locos and Coons, Softs and Hards, Masons, Abolitionists and Anti's, High and Low Pressure Tariffites for the sale of Spring and Summer Dry Goods. Printed by E. J. Ellis, Printer and bearing the date March 28, 1844; 21.5" x 17.5" (w/o frame), 23.25" x 19" (w/ frame).The Tariff and Whig references likely refer to the various Tariff Laws passed between the years 1835-1844 before Texas achieved statehood; when the Territory achieved the bulk of its income by importing goods from Europe. Texas was annexed in 1845.
