145. ACOMA POLYCHROME OLLA ATTRIBUTED TO "ACOMA MARY",

red and black-on-white, potted with steep sides, elongated neck, and concave base. A band of checkers and hatches zigzag around neck and lower body. Red parallelograms wrap around shoulder separating the repeating motifs, height 11.5" x diameter 12".

Stylistically, this olla has a zigzag motif interspersed with black and white foliate, elements common to Mary Histia’s work. Histia (1881-1973) was titled "Potter to the President of the United States" by Franklin D. Roosevelt, during whose term the Indian New Deal was established. Included under this policy was the 1935 Indian Arts and Crafts Act -- encouraging Native artistic development. For a similar example of this piece see Dwellers at the Source: Southwestern Indian Photographs of A.C. Vroman, 1895-1904 by Webb and Weinstein (1973: 124).

Flecks of white paint on body.
