1601. WONDERFUL ANTI-SLAVERY STENCILED BANNER,
cotton, laid out in U.S. flag form with black stenciled text on canton NO UNION/WITH SLAVERY with an exceptional polychrome painted eagle in flight above and 23 stars on upper and side margins. The fly of this banner has 6 black and 7 white stripes, sleeve sewn at hoist with original cord inside, 59" x 105". This banner was found in LaGrange, Indiana in a trunk belonging to William Henry Duff, an Irishman who immigrated to the United States in the 1840s. Duff, a surveyor by trade, lived in Rochester, New York, in the early 1860s, and it thought that this is the place of origin of the banner. While the 23 stars in the canton of this banner might suggest it was made in 1820, more than likely the stars represent the states left in the Union after the secession of the Southern States in 1861. Four states -- Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri and Delaware -- remained in the Union, despite the fact they were officially "slave-holders", and this probably explains the inclusion of their stars in the canton. The most parsimonius explanation is that the maker wanted to memorialize the states who had remained true to the Federal government, with most rejecting slavery as anathema to the Constitution. The motto NO UNION/WITH SLAVERY is almost certainly taken from masthead of William Loyd Garrison's weekly abolitionist newspaper THE LIBERATOR where the slogan No Union With Slaveholders ran in the same location for more than 20 years. Archival research strongly suggests this banner may have been used at a abolition convention held in Rochester, New York on January 11, 1861. As reported in the local Rochester papers, a rally was held at Corinthian Hall, and a banner similar to this one was displayed, bearing the slogan No Compromise With Slaveholders. This banner was featured in an episode of the PBS series "History Detectives" and a copy of the tape featuring the flag is included with the lot. A remarkable, graphic survivor of the abolition movement.
Scattered foxing and stains, several small interior tears and one hole below canton 2" x 1", VG.
