478. UN TOURNANT DE LA SCARPE BY J.B.C. COROT,

oil on canvas, signed lower left. A lush landscape with a small stream; on the stream is a small boat carrying two figures. In a later gesso and gilt frame; 22" x 18.5" (w/o frame), 30.25" x 27" (w/frame).

Jean Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875) was born in Paris to a well-to-do family. Initially trained for business, at 26, Corot began his career as an artist. He studied under Achille Michallon and Victor Bertin, and he traveled throughout France, as well as in England, Switzerland, and Italy. Corot exhibited at the Paris Salon frequently, and also at the 1862 International Exhibition in London. Though slow to receive recognition for his work (he did not sell a painting until he was 40), he was eventually recognized for the master he was, and one of the most significant figures in the Barbizon school.

Corot painted this landscape in Arras in 1871, having first visited the area some twenty years earlier and developed a deep appreciation for the surrounding countryside. The landscapes he painted in Arras, such as the example offered here, attracted a local following, including the Bollet family of Arras.
